BLUE CARTOON

Blue Cartoon

BLUE CARTOON has been one of the most consistent and popular indie power pop bands from the past 15 years.  While their catalog is not large, each release has been a gem, showing a healthy restelessness to grow, evolve and never staying in the same place.  Make sure you check out all their releases, at some point. After a six year or so hiatus, BLUE CARTOON has returned, in full force, with a new, bold new album, that takes them in a new, confident direction.  “Are You Getting Along?” was released back in March and put on your list of albums to properly check out – in the meantime, you can download and enjoy a track from it below.

“Hiatus = Side Projects (2007 – 2010)
In early 2007, the remaining members of Blue Cartoon decided a break was needed and placed the band on an indefinite hiatus. Jeff released his first solo album ‘Moments In Time’ in 2007 and a delightful collection of Christmas tunes called ‘Angels in the Snow’ in 2009.

In the meantime, David and Lee would begin a long recording project known as “The Spandrels”, which explored English folk inspired arrangements accompanied by eclectic instrumentation, elements of psychedelia and a spirited series of vocal duets.  While this project was eventually shelved to facilitate the creation and recording of ‘AYGO?’, they are swearing to release this collection.  The latest tentative release date for ‘The Spandrels’ is summer 2013.

Are You Getting On? (2013)
By the later part of 2009, Lee, Jeff and David began to discuss and envision the return of Blue Cartoon with a desire to create a more psychedelic and progressive form of pop. Coincidentally, a correspondence that had begun with Houston power pop veteran Terry Carolan, eventually led to a mutual audition that included drummer Mike Reynolds. With Lee back in the bass slot, the woodshedding began for a new album. Work on the album would be done in fits and starts over the next 2 years, but by the end of 2012 a new Blue Cartoon album was mixed and ‘in the can‘. The resulting album, ‘Are You Getting On?’ was released on March 12, 2013.

Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, Terry had to make the difficult decision of leaving the band prior to the release of the new album. One more time, the band was forced to retool. But this time it was going to be different.  Instead of trying to find yet another guitar player who shared their vision, Lee moved back to guitar and the band selected Tim Winters for bass. Also, considering the heavy emphasis that keys played in the arrangements on their new album, they recruited keyboardist, Brendan Rogers (The Alice Rose, Jodee and the Messengers) to enhance the live support of ‘AYGO?’.  But this was not just another touring line-up.  For as soon as the early demos started flying around, they immediately knew that another chapter had begun in the continuing evolution of their sound.

The band is currently playing a few select dates and are in pre-production for album #6.  They are planning to head back into the studio in the summer of 2013 to begin recording, with a Spring 2014 target as the release date.

This is what I love about PGH. Discovering new music, and new bands. I had never heard of this band before, but I really like it. Like the name too. Makes me think of ” Fritz the cat ” or something like that.

The entire Blue Cartoon catalog is consistently high-caliber – each album building on the developing craft of the band from the previous one. This new one is their boldest step into their ever-evolving sound….
