JANUARY 2013 DIGI COMPILATION

Okay, this is a major treat.  Pay Attention. Ears astride by my words.  Come hither and listen, dear one.

This man, Michael Simmons is pretty darn special.  Most of you, sadly, just don’t know that.

Yet.

See, he had this band some 10-15 years ago, in Los Angeles called Sparkle*jets U.K. (www.myspace.com/sparklejetsuk)  They had all the right influences, all the right tunes and…not a prayer to gain the attention of za masses, let alone the power pop masses.  This guy, Simmons decided to just let go, do other things.

He continued to write.  Record.  Write.  Record.  Get better at pretty much every instrument under the sun. Write.  Record.

No one’s heard the dozens of tunes he’s written.

OR the 17 cover songs that you are about to experience.  And enjoy.

They’re yours.  Why?

Because…Michael Simmons is freakin’ B-A-C-K.

This…is Phase 1.  Step One.

It’s called “It’s the End of the World as We Know It and I Feel Live”.

Maybe, if you are nice and drop him a note of appreciations(sirsparklejet@gmail.com), Michael(see, he’ll be “Michael” by the time you finishing listening to this project), he’ll start letting us hear some of these dozens of most assuredly awesome songs he’s been writing the past 10 years.

So, let’s get to it.

How about some information on the project you about to enjoy?  SURE!

“WARTS AND ALL…. ” and how can one guy play ‘live’? These songs were done in the Fall of 2012 for a Facebook group called ‘Theme Music’. Each week a new theme is posted, and memebers record a song that fi ts the theme, and post it (as a video) to the group online. Most of them are either solo acoustic performances in one take, or big studio productions with a lip/sync video. I choose to do something in between. My tracks are usually still ‘live’ with all the normal mistakes you’d expect, but I play all the instruments. It’s what it would be like if I could clone myself and got together to jam on songs I don’t really know. Most of these songs were first attempts of songs I don’t know how to play. Enjoy! FYI there is also a Blu-Ray and DVD edition of this with all the videos, lots of commentary (excuses!) by the artiste, and a physical CD. If you’re just drying to have one, drop me a note on Facebook and we’ll see what we can do.

released 18 December 2012
All performances by Michael Simmons, live in one take, except:
Drums on ‘She Said, She Said’ by Wyatt Theobold
Bass on “Don’t Look Back” by Cameron Lew
Rhythm guitar on “Don’t Look Back” by Robbie Rist Recording was typically done on multi-track equipment, but each take was done ‘live’ in one go, with a camera running. Some songs (mostly the 2nd half of the album) were recorded live with a webcam or iPhone, which is why they don’t sound as good. Recorded and Mixed by Michael Simmons at Crab Apple West Studios, Huntington Beach CA

IT GETS BETTER.
Each one of the 17 tracks has its own video where you can enjoy and watch Simmons play and record the song totally live, as it was being recorded.  Personal Tip:  Watch “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” and experience how insanely talented this guy is.

Absolutely something I will listen to and come back to again and again. Easily one of the most enjoyable “sets” of music I have heard in a long time from start to finish & a few twists and turns, just enough to keep you wondering…. “did he just do that? yep, he sure did and it really works”!

  8. Brian Kassan says:

Awesome. Michael has always been a formidable talent and these videos/performances are a perfect example. Glad I stumbled upon this! Hi Mike!

That’s one of the many things I want PGH to be able to do – highlight and give a platform to overlooked artists like Mike Simmons. A great example of the hope for a site like this…
