Part of our information disseminating goal at PGH is keep you posted on the newest Power Pop music coming our way. If you’ve ever checked out my Fix It In The Mix blog, you know that I take a rather liberal view of new stuff. It could mean released last week, last month or last year – but, as I am so fond of saying, ‘If it’s new to me, then it’s new.  Check out the blog  at THIS LINK.

THE PLAYLIST:

1. Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers – New England (Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Beserkley Collection)
(Not nearly new. Just here for the Boston boy, Bruce Brodeen.)
2. Robyn Hitchcock – Be Still (Love From London)
(Same as he ever was. And that’s awesome.)
3. The Sheers – Do What You Decide (Goodbye World)
(Featuring Danny DeLaMatyr from the criminally unknown band The Days. McCartney meets Supertramp in 2006.)
4. Engloria – High Tonight (Shine)
(Americana from a NewYork-based band whose Brit-pop roots often show through.)
5. The Paul & John – Long Way Back (Everything Comes Together / Long Way Back Bandcamp single)
(Pop culture critic and songwriter joins brilliant guitarist for a romp through rock’s back pages.)
6. Bob Evans – My Big Mouth (Suburban Kid)
(One of the best singer-songwriter albums to emerge from Australia in a wallaby’s age.)
7. Charles Jenkins – Sailors Here (The City Gates)
(Yep. That Icecream Hands guy, still writing and recording perceptive pop vignettes.)
8. Swiss Alps – Ursa Minor (Swiss Alps)
(Encore performance from these east coast purveyors of lo-fi pop.)
9. Ross – Cosmos Bell (Once Upon a Time EP & A Collection for Enemies and Friends)
(A tribute to Big Star & Chris Bell, one would think? Certainly sounds so. FINALLY available in the U.S. iTunes store. You’ll never find the CD, so get the download – NOW!)
10. The See See – Citadel Shuffle (Mary Soul – single)
(Wonderful band that’s a little bit Laurel Canyon and a little bit Rubber Soul.)
11. Rah Rah – First Kiss (The Poet’s Dead)
(Alternative? Plain ‘ol Rock? Modern pop? Good stuff, no matter how you slice it.)
12. Cazadores – Dancer (Hyperion Days)
(These Norse alt-rockers have found the sweet spot in the Strokes/Cure/Smashing Pumpkins triangle.)
13. Peelgreems – 0018-A Paranoid Lonely Guy (Big Adventure)
(Near-prog flourishes and a sweet vocal blend distinguish this keyboard-driven piece. An inscrutable yet accessible band.)
14. The Nines – Doesn’t Matter Anyway (Properties of Sound Japanese reissue)
(And speaking of piano, this gorgeous ballad finds Elton fronting XTC. Yet another highlight of this classic album.)
15. John Hopkins – In the Sun (Wax Apple)
16. John Hopkins – Sunny Sunday Afternoon (Sunlight Madness)
(A double dip from an artist I only recently discovered. Lennon & McCartney strikingly evoked on these stellar tracks.)
17. Waz – Home (The Sweet Bye and Bye)
(Cleveland native who migrated to L.A. and formerly strummed with Pete Yorn. Beautiful soft pop arrangements and heart-felt lyrics.)
18. Secret Dakota Ring – Beautiful Girl (Do Not Leave Baggage All The Way)
(Mega-plaudits, both for the band name and this lovely bit of harmonic beauty.)
