INTRODUCTION:

In April 1967, The Beatles would form Beatles & Co., which would soon evolve into Apple Corps. The June release of “Sgt. Pepper” found The Beatles enjoying its greatest critical acclaim. But that would give way to emotional devastation in August, when The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein (STEEN), unexpectedly passed away. Almost immediately, the band threw itself into two projects, the filming of “Magical Mystery Tour” and trying to decide what Apple Corps would become. The company’s original purpose was simply to shelter money from the dreaded “Taxman.” Largely at Paul McCartney’s urging, The Beatles’ first commercial venture with Apple Corps became Apple Publishing. Over the past decade, the UK label RPM Records has compiled five volumes of music taken from the vaults of Apple Publishing, which includes demos and alternate takes, as well as a few of the commercially released singles for which Apple held the publishing rights.

ONTO THE PODCAST:

Welcome back to another “Fix It In the Mix” podcast. I’m your host, Bruce Brown.  Today, we once again set our sights on Apple Publishing, which The Beatles launched in the spring of 1967. The publishing company was the first commercial enterprise of Apple Corps, The Beatles’ holding company that was originally launched as a sophisticated tax shelter to dodge the exorbitant rates imposed by Her Majesty’s treasury. But with The Beatles’ name attached, it didn’t take long for the word to penetrate the music community, and the band soon found its office inundated with demo tapes.  Over the past decade, the UK label RPM Records has compiled five volumes of music taken from the vaults of Apple Publishing, which includes demos and alternate takes, as well some of the commercially released tunes for which Apple held the publishing rights.

This tech setup doesn’t work so well on my iPad. Will there be a way to subscribe to the podcasts via iTunes? I want to listen!

  3. Marlene Lipson says:

Okay, I just opened the podcast in a new safari tab and it works, and I now see it’s powered by amazon. I bet that means iTunes will be farther off. I can only listen while online, not on the subway on my iPad, but it’s better than nothing. Listening now!

Bruce(Brown) has done such amazing job with so much but this particular series is one of my faves, so far….with ITUNES, that is coming. I’ve just not had the time to set that up. I tried a few months ago but something went wrong and I couldn’t get it to work. (I’m just not a techie person…)

If someone in the PGH community is well-versed(or versed enough!) with setting up Itunes podcasts, please contact me: popgeekheaven@gmail.com

Excellent show! Nice to hear these tracks in something other than a many-generation, muddy presentation. I’m hoping that a future Apple installment will include something by the Sundown Playboys. Well done!
